The conservative talk radio show host Rush Limbaugh criticized First Lady Michelle Obama for campaigning for children’s health, in which she encourages young Americans to eat healthy and be active. Which is a good thing, right?
Apparently not to Limbaugh, who said “The problem is, and dare I say this, it doesn’t look like Michelle Obama follows her own nutritionary, dietary advice…I’m trying to say that our First Lady does not project the image of women that you might see on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue or of a woman Alex Rodriguez might date every six months or what have you” (wgnradio.com).
Newsflash, Mr. Limbaugh, but not all healthy women look like waif-ish supermodels. (Have you been living under a rock your entire life?) In fact, this is an UNhealthy weight for most women. We are not all built on mile long legs. While a few are naturally thin as rails, the rest of us have to starve ourselves to look that way.
Is this what Rush Limbaugh believes is healthy? Starvation? Does he know that anorexia is a pandemic, particularly among models? Does he think before he talks? Or is he delusional?
There are so many more things I could say to demean Rush Limbaugh, but I won’t bother. Instead, I’ll forgive him and I’ll post this on the internet for the world to see in hopes that my daughter, and all the daughters of the world, stop holding themselves to someone else’s standard of beauty. I hope that they will listen to Mrs. Obama and make healthy choices. And I hope they will be inspired by Maggie Gyllenhaal, never letting someone’s boring idea of beauty get them down.
But first, I have one more thing to say. Michelle Obama could kick Rush Limbaugh’s overweight, cigar-smoking, smack-talking ass. Literally. Have you seen her biceps? (If not, scroll up. That’s her, the vibrant woman in the green dress.)
