We might think it ironic that a children’s author was one of the most prolific (and succinct) writers of the 20th century. But what better way to touch the future than appeal to children?

The first book I read from cover to cover was by Dr. Seuss. I can remember sitting with my mom and sister and feeling proud that I could read, too. While they were buried in their chapter books, my nose was in “Green Eggs and Ham.” I was 4 years old and you couldn’t keep me away from Dr. Seuss. I’ve been addicted to the written word ever since.

So many of his quotes have a spiritual undertone.

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

And messages of self-love.

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.”

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

“Be who you are and say what you mean. Because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

“You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And you are the one who’ll decide where to go…”

“Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”

“You are you. Now, isn’t that pleasant?”

And wisdom on education, direction and happiness. I’m starting to think that he may have been a prophet.

There’s a lot of sadness and pain in the world. Children absorb all of it. They absorb insecurities and doubts and beliefs and form their own complicated questions about existence. How lucky we are to have this man guide our children with his whimsical literature, creating little lovers of life.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss. It is a happy day, indeed.

  1. I love #5…I read that book to my son “I can read with my eyes shut”…such a beautiful message to keep learning about the world by reading…and opening your mind.
Dr. Seuss was more than a rhyming genius, he truly had so much to teach us 😉

  2. These quotes gave me goosebumps! Thank you for sharing this! I am a huge fan of Dr. Seuss, especially now that I’m an adult and can appreciate the larger beauty of his written works,
